The Criminal Court has extended the remand period of four suspects arrested in connection to the May 6 blast that targeted Parliament Speaker and former Maldives President, Mohamed Nasheed.
Five people have been arrested thus far in connection to the blast. They are Adhuham Ahmed (25), Mujaz Ahmed (21), Thahmeen Ahmed (32), and Ahmed Fathih (23) and Ali Haisham (27). While Mujaz Ahmed and Thahumeen Ahemd were arrested May 8, the main suspect, Adhuham Mohamed was arrested from his residential home in Hulhumale' on May 9th. Fathih was arrested in B. Dharavandhoo on May 19 while Ali Haisham was arrested on June 6.
Providing an update on their remand periods, the police told AVAS that Adhuham, Thahumeen and Mujaz's remand period was most recently extended on June 22 for 30 days. This was the fourth extension of their remand period. Fathih's remand period was most recently extended on June 20 for 15 days, and this was the third such extension. Haisham has been remanded into custody twice since his arrest. His remand period was most recently extended by 15 days on June 27.
Nasheed was taken to ADK Hospital in Maldives' capital Male' on the night of May 6 after he sustained serious injuries in an explosion near his residence in Male'. According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the blast occurred when an IED strapped to a motorcycle was detonated. Multiple critical surgeries were performed on Nasheed at ADK Hospital, and he is currently recuperating from his injuries in Germany.
Revealing updates on the probe into the terrorist attack on President Mohamed Nasheed, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during a press conference held Tuesday said the investigations were proceeding swiftly and that he was closely monitoring the progress of the inquiries.
