Pres nominates four names for Information Commissioner post

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has nominated four names for the post of Information Commissioner.

President Solih chose four candidates from among the applicants for the post and forwarded the names for Parliament consideration on Monday. During the first sitting of the third session of the year, the parliament's Secretary General read out the letter sent by the president nominating four names for the post.

The president's nominations are former Deputy Minister at Economic Ministry and former deputy CEO of VMedia Group, Shiham Mohamed Waheed, Ahmed Ahidh Rasheed, Azleema Ahmed and Mariyam Aleem. The nominations have now been forwarded to the Parliament committee on independent Institutions for assessment.

The president had previously nominated Shiham Mohamed Waheed, Ahmed Ahidh Rasheed and Mariyam Aleem for the same post during the second session of the Parliament. However, the parliament did not approve any of the nominations at the time.

Information Commissioner’s Office was established by the president on 13th July 2014 with the approval of the Parliament to uphold the right of the public interest of acquiring and dissemination of the information and to encourage the enforcement of open governance among the state institutions. The position of Information Commissioner became vacant when then-commissioner Hussain Fiyaz Moosa stepped down from the post. If the post of Information Commissioner becomes vacant, the position must be filled within 90 days as per the law. However, this duration has already passed since Fiyaz resigned from the post, and the position remains open.
