Man who threatened Nasheed jailed for contempt of court

The suspect arrested for posting threats against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on social media has been sentenced to jail for contempt of court.

Maldives Police Service said the 40-year-old suspect, identified as Ismail Yafis Bin Khalid, was presented to R. Ungoofaaru Magistrate Court to decide on his remand on Monday. During the hearing, the man was sentenced to 15 days in jail for contempt of court. The judge also ordered to remand him in custody for 15 days, the police said.

Nasheed is currently in the United Kingdom after having been a target of a terror attack last May, during which he sustained serious injuries. Ismail Yafis Bin Khalid was arrested in R. Meedhoo after he posted on social media that he would harm the former president if he returned to the Maldives.

Nasheed has voiced reluctance to return to the Maldives before the investigation into the May 6 attack is fully concluded. He has requested the Parliament to extend his leave such that he is able to remain abroad for the time being.
