Additional jail officer from Maafushi Prison tests positive

An additional jail officer at Maafushi Prison has tested positive for COVID-19.

Maldives Correctional Service Saturday said an officer first tested positive on September 3rd, after exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19. In order to ensure the safety of those at the jail, the prison was placed on high alert since then, and movement of inmates was temporarily suspended, Corrections said. An additional officer has since tested positive.

The daily number of COVID-19 cases recorded in the Maldives has been increasing over the past weeks. While 157 cases were recorded over the past 24 hours, 45 cases were from the capital, Male' City and 106 cases were from the atolls. Six additional cases were also identified from operational resorts. Active cases are currently above 2,000.

The Maldives has recorded 81,810 cases and 226 deaths to date.
