Maafushi Jail on alert after positive COVID-19 case

Maafushi Jail has been locked down after a jail officer tested positive for COVID-19.

Maldives Correctional Service said the officer got tested for COVID-19 after exhibiting symptoms of the virus. Corrections said the alert level at the jail was raised from 0000hrs on Friday. All movemement of inmates have been temporarily suspended.

The Maldives' COVID-19 situation seems to be slowly detorioraing once again. The daily number of cases have remained above 100 in recent days, with over 150 confirmed cases recorded daily during the last four days.

According to the most recent statistics issued by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), 173 positive cases were recorded over the past 24 hours, out of which 68 cases were from the capital, Male'. 89 cases were recorded in inhabited islands while 16 additional cases were registered in operational resorts. This increases the country's tally to 81,474. While 1,895 cases are active, the death toll is 226.
