Maafushi Jail placed under high alert over spike in COVID-19 cases

Maafushi Jail will be placed under high alert on Friday afternoon after a spike in COVID-19 cases in the jail.

A press release by Maldives Correctional Service on Friday said jail officers and inmates exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 were tested, and seven officers and four inmates tested positive for the virus. Therefore, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA) guidelines and Corrections' regulations, the jail will be placed under high alert from 04:00 pm on Friday, the statement said.

Corrections said until normalcy is restored, family meetings and lawyer meetings with inmates, and court hearings will be held online.
