Mohamed Shafiu has been elected as a general member of the Maldives Media Council.
A seat on the media council became vacant when former member, Mohamed Yaameen Ibrahim resigned from the council. In the election held Saturday, Shafiu received 57 votes while the remaining candidates, Ahmed Waheed and Aishath Hussain received 36 and 0 votes respectively.
The Maldives Media Council is an independent legal entity that works to preserve, promote and maintain the freedom of press, within the legal frame work of the country and to encourage the growth of a sense of responsibility, public service, ethics and a high standard of professionalism among all those engaged in the profession of Journalism.
