Maldives Correctional Services has said the cause of death of Mohamed Aslam, the inmate who recently collapsed at passed Hulhumale' Prison, remains unknown.
Aslam was serving a three-year sentence for a drug-related offense at Hulhumale' Prison. He collapsed on Monday evening and was immediately taken to the hospital, where he was subsequently declared dead.
A statement released by Corrections said Aslam collapsed while sitting in the yard area on Monday evening. He was taken to Tree Top Hospital within eight minutes, and Corrections attempted to notify his family within 30 minutes of the incident, the statement read. However, they were able to reach the family approximately15 minutes later, said Corrections.
The statement noted that Aslam had suffered a head injury, believed to have been sustained during his fall. The incident was recorded on CCTV footage.
The hospital declared Aslam as dead at 6:55 pm, and Corrections was notified of his death at 8:23 pm. The death form stated that his cause of death is unknown.
Corrections has denied allegations by Aslam's family that he was assaulted by jail officers.
