A 33-year-old local male passed away in a fatal drowning in the waters off Maafushi Jail in K. Maafushi on Friday.
Maldives Police Service said they received reports of a person drowning in the Maafushi around 2:22 am early Friday. According to the police, he had already passed away when he was taken to the island's health center.
The police said the case was under investigation and did not disclose further details.
It is believed that the deceased was attempting to smuggle contraband to Maafushi Prison before drowning. He swam to Maafushi's shore and waded back into the water when he was discovered by officers from Maldives Corrections Service. No comments have been made by either the police or Corrections on the reports.
