Two flights diverted from VIA due to bad weather

Two flights have been diverted from Velana International Airport (VIA) to Sri Lanka due to unfavorable weather conditions.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL)'s Media Official said a flight arriving to VIA from Colombo, and a Lufthansa flight were diverted on Sunday morning. The flights will attempt landing at VIA once again after weather conditions improves, he said.

Although to international flights have been diverted, domestic flights have not faced any interruption thus far.

The Maldives is currently experiencing bad weather conditions, and several weather-related accidents have occurred over the past 24 hours. Earlier this morning, Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) assisted a safari which was sinking four nautical miles off Thilafushi island. 19 people aboard the vessel were rescued by the Coast Guard.

Maldives Meteorological Service has issued orange and yellow alerts to a large part of the country, and authorities have cautioned travelers to practice caution.
