In the debate carried out at the Parliament regarding the budget allocated to the Auditor General's Office, Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb proposed conducting an audit on the Civil Service. He asked for an audit to be included in the Audit Office's work plan for the upcoming year, while also stressing on the need for such an audit.
Ilyas said while minimum wage will be introduced in the Maldives for the first time next January, this will in turn raise the wages of civil servants and employees of all sectors of the government. Therefore, it is imperative that its performance is assessed, said the MP. He further noted that the services provided to the public must be improved, and such an audit will provide a good opportunity for the government to bring about positive changes.
The Parliament approved MP Ilyas' proposition with 49 members voting in favour of an audit. No members voted against it.
