Dismissal of independent commission heads referred to committee

The dismissal of Presidents, Vice Presidents, and members of some independent commissions has been referred to the Parliament's Independent Institutions Committee for review.

The dismissal of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)'s Vice-President Abdul Salam, Commission Member Thoha Mohamed, Civil Service Commission (CSC)'s President Mohamed Naseeh, Vice-President of the Elections Commission (EC) Ali Nashath, and Commission Members Dr. Mohamed Zahir and Mohamed Asif were proposed by the Independent Institutions Committee.

In a letter to Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdullah, the Independent Institutions Committee said two cases had been submitted to the committee alleging that ACC's Vice President Abdul Salam and Commission Member Thoha Mohamed had breached ACC Act's Article 17)a) and b) on multiple occasions. Similarly, CSC President Naseeh is alleged to have violated his official responsibilities and behaved inappropriately for a commission member. The allegations against EC Vice-President Nashath and members Zahir and Asif include violations of the commission’s code of conduct, with a case submitted against them on October 22.

The Independent Institutions Committee has approved the removal of members from these commissions, with the majority vote of members present at a committee meeting held on November 6.

The decision to remove the presidents, vice presidents, and members of some independent institutions coincides with parliamentary efforts to appoint individuals of the President's choosing to the posts of ACC and EC President and Vice President.
