Amendments have been proposed to grant the President the authority to appoint the President and Vice-President of the Election Commission (EC) and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Under the current Election Commission Act and Anti-Corruption Commission Act, the Presidents and Vice-Presidents of these commissions are chosen internally by commission members. Once appointed, the President and Parliament are notified of the appointment within 48 hours.
According to the proposed amendment, the President and Vice-President of the EC and ACC will be appointed by the President. The President must submit the name of a commission member to Parliament for approval when an appointment is required. The candidate can be appointed only if approved by a majority vote of the MPs present.
