Pres seeks parliament approval for Habeeb’s HRCM appointment

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has sought Parliament approval for the appointment of Ismail Habeeb Abdul Raheem as a member of the Human Rights Commission (HRCM).

The President’s Office opened the opportunity for those interested in applying for HRCM membership on June 6, following the resignation of HRCM member Dr. Ahmed Adhuham Abdulla in October last year. The deadline for applications expired on June 30.

At Monday’s Parliament sitting, a letter sent by President Dr. Muizzu requesting approval for the appointment of former Elections Commission (EC) member Ismail Habeeb was read. The nomination has been referred to the Parliament’s Human Rights Committee for consideration.

Habeeb has a long history with EC, having worked there for 21 years. During that time, Habeeb served as a member and vice-president of the EC. Habeeb left the EC on March 13 this year.

The current members of the HRCM are Commission President Mariyam Muna, Commission Members Moominaa Waheed, Aminath Shifaath Abdul Razzaq and Samaau Ahmed Najeeb.
