Speaker requests to expedite work on pending bills

Speaker of the Parliament and former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed has requested the Parliament to expedite work on the bills currently in committee stage.

During Monday's Parliament sitting, Nasheed said delay in submission of bills by the government has caused the Parliament to sit idly. While Nasheed has expressed concern on the delays from the government side, 33 bills remain pending in committee stage.

Sharing the details of the bills, Nasheed said 7 bills are being assessed by the joint committees while 5 bills are with both the Judiciary Committee and the Decentralization Committee. The Social Affairs Committee, the National Development And Heritage Committee are working on 4 bills each while the Committee on Economic Affairs and Human Rights And Gender Comimittee are working on 2 bills each. The Committee on Independent Institutions and the Public Accounts Committee are each working on one bill.

The government will be submitting 32 bills during the current session of the Parliament. This includes legal, social, economic, environmental bills. Although it is said there are delays in the government submitting bills, government entities state othwerwise.
