Over 30 airlines operating to the Maldives

Tourism Ministry has said over 30 airlines operate to the Maldives.

The ministry's official statistics show 33 airlines currently operate to the Maldives. The most number of tourists arrive in the Maldives via Emirates and Qatar Airways.

With the peak tourism season around the corner, the government hopes for a new airline to begin operation to the Maldives within the next two months. The latest airline to begin operations to Maldives was an Italian airline, Neos, which commenced direct flights between Italy and Maldives earlier this week.

The government set a goal to host 1.5 million tourists before the end of the year. However, due to the COVID-19 situation, 1 million tourists are expected to visit the Maldives this year.

While the number of airlines operating to the Maldives has increased, Velana International Airport's capacity remains limited. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) is working on resolving the issue.
