Over 600 cases of stroke in one year: IGMH

State-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has said the hospital treated over 600 cases of stroke over the past year.

29 October is annually celebrated globally as World Stroke Day. In a statement issued by the hospital on the occasion, the hospital said its Stroke Center treated 291 stroke patients between October 17, 2020 and October 25, 2020, and 626 patients from September 27, 2020 until now.

The hospital said the Stroke Center is a center designated to deliver the treatment necessary for stroke patients at the earliest and offer regular post-discharge services to patients. Most patients treated at the center suffered ischemic strokes, which happen when a vessel supplying blood to the brain is obstructed. While 210 patients sought treatment for ischemic strokes, 44 patients suffered hemorrhagic strokes, which occur when a blood vessel breaks and bleeds into the brain.

World Stroke Day is observed to underscore the serious nature and high rakes of stroke, raise awareness of the prevention and treatment of the condition, and ensure better care and support for survivors. The theme for this year is 'Minutes Can Save Lives'. IGMH will be conducting special activities in Hulhumale' together with Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to mark the day.
