Maldives President tests positive for COVID-19

Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has tested positive for COVID-19. The President announced he had tested positive in a tweet posted on Saturday.

In his tweet, the President said he learned he was positive for the virus when he underwent a PCR test on Friday night to travel on an atoll tour. He stated that he was in home isolation and said that he was doing well.

President Solih was set to depart to Sh. Foakaidhoo on Saturday to campaign for main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s candidate for the upcoming Komandoo by-election, Mohamed Rashid. He was to be accompanied by Speaker of the Parliament and former President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed.

Last April, President Solih's spouse, First Lady Fazna Ahmed, tested positive for COVID-19. The President's mother, Moominaa Hassanfulhu, also tested positive for the virus last May. However, the President did not contract the virus both times.
