Legal vacuum prevents ACC from looking into electoral fraud claims

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has informed the opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) that it cannot look into the complaint submitted by the party regarding the 2018 presidential election.

Claiming electoral fraud, PPM submitted a complaint to ACC, the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), Maldives Police Service, and the Ombudsperson's Office for Transitional Justice. The complaint highlighted 25 points and said the party had evidence that supported the claims.

In a letter sent to PPM by ACC, the commission said decisions regarding cases submitted at the commission are made based on the majority vote of the commission's members. However, the letter said the commission is currently in a legal vacuum following the commission's members' resignation.

The letter further noted that the commission would make a decision on looking into the case once new members are appointed to the commission.
