The World Health Organization (WHO)'s Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has commended United Nations' General Assembly President and Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid's efforts to ensure equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.
In a tweet published on Friday, Tedros said he welcomed Shahid's leadership to commit to vaccine equity and called on world leaders to join the campaign.
In Shahid's first address after accepting the UNGA presidency, Shahid called on world leaders from 193 countries to ensure equitable access to vaccines. Several countries and organizations are taking part in the vaccine equity campaign led by Shahid as the General Assembly's New Year's Resolution.
Shahid is preparing to hold a high-level event on February 25, to galvanize momentum for universal COVID vaccination.
