Remand extended for human trafficking suspects

The Criminal Court has extended the remand period for two suspects arrested for human trafficking.

Maldives Police Service arrested four individuals, including a police officer, on January 5. The suspects are men aged between 28 and 65. A foreigner is also among the detained. The arrested officer was placed on unpaid suspension due to the ongoing criminal investigation.

The court on Friday extended 65-year old Mohamed Waheed and 55-year old Moosa Fathuhee's remand by 15 days. This is the third extension of their remand, first extended by ten days and later by 15 days.

Both Waheed and Fathuhee have requested the court to ease their detainment. However, as sufficient evidence has been collected against them, the presiding judge said they could not be released back into society as they are a threat to the community.
