MDP's Rashid wins Komandoo seat in close race

Main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate Mohamed Rashid on Saturday won the Komandoo by-election in a close race.

The Komandoo parliament seat became vacant in December last year following the death of MP Hussain Waheed. Three candidates contested in the by-election held Saturday to fill the seat: Rashid from MDP, Moosa Faathuhee from the opposing Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM), and Abdul Hannaan Idris from Maldives National Party (MNP).

While seven vote boxes were placed in constituency islands Komandoo, Foakaidhoo, and Maroshi, and the capital Male', Rashid won majority votes in all but two boxes.

Fathuhee from PPM got the lead in the vote box placed at Komandoo School. While Hannen received 144 votes from the box, Fathuhee received 152 votes. MNP's Hannaan received 37 votes.

From the vote box placed in Komandoo Preschool, Rashid received 159 votes while Fahuhee received 92 votes. Hannan received 64 votes from the box.

While only one vote box was placed in Sh. Maroshi, Rashid received 161 votes from the box, Fathuhy received 95. Hannaan received only four votes from the box.

From the two boxes placed in Foakaidhoo, one was won by Rashid and the other by Fathuhee. Fathuhee won one box by receiving 202 votes compared to Rashid's 195 votes. Hannan received 13 votes. Foakaidhoo is Rashid's native island.

From the two boxes placed in Male' City, Rashid received 234 votes from one box and 280 from the other. Fathuhee won 178 votes from the first box and 242 from the second box. Hannan received 68 and 88 votes.
