Newly elected Komandoo MP, Mohamed Rashid, has taken his oath of office. Rashid took his oath at a special ceremony held at the Parliament Wednesday morning.
Rashid was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Husnu-Al-Suood. Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed and some parliamentarians were present at the ceremony.
A by-election was held for Komandoo Constituency on February 5, after the seat became vacant with the death of MP Hussain Waheed. Three candidates contested for the seat: Rashid, Moosa Fathuhee from the opposing Progressive Party of Maldives, and Abdul Hannan Idris from Maldives National Party (MNP).
Rashid won Saturday's election with a 240 vote lead against Fathuhee. While Fathuhee received 1,161 votes, Rashid received 1,401 votes. Hannan received 323 votes.
Out of the 3,309 people eligible to vote in the election, 2,932 people cast their vote. The voter turnout was 88.61 percent. Among the votes, 2,885 votes were valid while 47 votes were deemed invalid.
