British High Commission opens in the Maldives

A British High Commission has been opened in the Maldives for the first time.

The High Commission was opened by the United Kingdom's Minister of State for South and Central Asia, the UN and the Commonwealth Lord Tariq Ahmed, and State Minister of the Maldives Foreign Ministry Ahmed Khaleel.

The British High Commission is the first European High Commission that opened in the Maldives.

In a video message sent for the opening ceremony, the Maldives Foreign Minister and the President of the United Nations 76th General Assembly Abdulla Shahid said the UK is a very important partner for the Maldives' development. He said the opening of a British High Commission in the Maldives attests to the growing relationship between both countries.

The UK previously appointed non-resident ambassadors based in Sri Lanka for both the Maldives and Sri Lanka. The first resident ambassador was appointed in 2019.

Australia will also open a High Commission in the Maldives soon.
