Maldives to sign deal with Indian company to lay submarine cable

The Maldives government will be laying its first submarine cable together with India's Reliance Jio company.

The agreement to lay submarine cables in the Maldives will be signed at a special ceremony scheduled for Monday morning at Crossroads Maldives. The agreement will be signed on behalf of the Maldives government by Maldives Fund Management Corporation's subsidiary company Ocean Connect Maldives.

Reliance Jio is an Indian telecommunications company owned by Asia's richest billionaire, Mukesh Ambani. The company will become the operator of the world's largest submarine cable in the near future. The Maldives will be interlinked to the India-Asia Express Cable currently being deployed by Reliance Gio in Asia.

The Maldives currently has three internet service providers: DHIRAAGU, Ooredoo, and Focus Infocom. The service providers work with different parties and use private submarine cables to offer services.

While the government has decided to lay its own submarine cables, the government recently lowered the cost of internet in the Maldives.
