Former UN General Assembly President and former Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has stated that India should be granted a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

Speaking at an event of the "What India Thinks Today" summit organised by India's TV9, Shahid highlighted India’s global significance and said India is the world's largest democracy with a population of 1.4 billion. For this reason alone, India should have a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, Shahid said.

Shahid, who is also the president of the Maldives’ largest opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), praised India's role in the international arena, particularly India's assistance to various countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shahid also met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the summit, and shared his perspectives on India’s role in shaping the future of global governance.
