Maldives pledges US$ 200,000 to SAARC Relief Fund

The Maldives has pledged USD 200,000 to the SAARC COVID-19 Emergency Fund proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During regional discussions held Sunday among leaders of SAARC countries via video conference, PM Modi proposed to establish an emergency relief fund that can be utilized by all SAARC countries as required. PM Modi also offered rapid response teams and other expertise to deal with the crisis. While the number of COVID-19 cases in South East Asia is significantly lesser than the high numbers of Europe, PM Modi had noted the importance of preparing ahead and working together.

Welcoming PM Modi's initiative to create the fund and its pledge of USD 10 million, Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid said the Government of Maldives will be joining the initiative and pledged USD 200,000 to address issues emanating from COVID-19.

COVID-19 has affected over 276,000 people all over the world, and over 11,400 people have died from the virus. Maldives has recorded 13 confirmed cases of the virus.
