All Maldivians in Ukraine safely evacuated

All Maldivian nationals in Ukraine have been safely evacuated.

The last of Maldivians in Ukraine, five students and a family of three in Kharkiv and one student in Dnipro, traveled to the western Ukrainian city of Lviv on Wednesday. Late last night, they were able to cross the western border into Hungary.

The Foreign Ministry said Minister Abdulla Shahid spoke to his Hungarian counterpart via the phone, and met him in New York to arrange safe passage for Maldivians in Ukraine.

The Maldivians who were evacuated to Hungary are currently in the country's capital, Budapest. They will depart for the Maldives on Friday, the ministry said.

A total of 53 Maldivians were evacuated from Ukraine in the midst of Russia declaring war on Ukraine. Most Maldivians were residing in Kharkiv. Some of them have already returned to the Maldives.
