Henveiru South MP Hussain 'Andhun' Shaheem defeated Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb in the tiebreaker vote for the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Parliamentary Group Deputy Leader position.
The first round of voting took place on February 18, in which three candidates contested for the two Deputy Leader positions. While Alifushi MP Mohamed 'Bigey' Rasheed Hussain came out on top and secured one chair, Ilyas and Hussain won an equal number of votes, leading to a stalemate.
In the second round of voting that took place on Monday, 63 out of 65 MDP Parliamentary Group members cast their votes. Hussain won 38 votes while Ilyas won 25 votes.
In the February 18 voting, Hithadhoo North MP Mohamed Aslam was elected as the Parliamentary Group leader while Fuvahmulah Central MP Hussian Mohamed Didi ran for Secretary-General position uncontested and won 63 out of 65 votes. Thinadhoo North MP Abdul Mughnee was elected the Chief Whip against Makunudhoo MP Mohamed Raaee.
Komandoo MP Mohamed Rashid, Vaikaradhoo MP Hassan Ziyad, Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Shifau, Macchangolhi South MP Ahmed Haytham, and Fonadhoo MP Ali Siraq were elected as whips in the February 18 election.
