The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has inspected the Hulhumale' Prison and Detention Center. HRCM visited the two sites on Wednesday and Thursday.
The aim of the visit was to assess the facilities' condition and identify if any misconduct against foreign detainees was being committed. Furthermore, the team also assessed the condition of the staff at both facilities and identified the challenges they face in the work environment.
HRCM said any immediate changes that need to be made would be brought to the attention of the relevant authorities. A report will be prepared on their findings and sent to Maldives Correctional Services, Maldives Immigration, and other relevant authorities.
HRCM last visited the Hulhumale' Detention Centre in 2019.
