Maldives condemns storming of al-Aqsa mosque by Israeli forces

The Government of Maldives has condemned the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli forces last Friday.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Maldives government condemned the Israeli forces' actions and denounced attacking and arresting unarmed Palestinian worshipers during this holy month of Ramadan.

The statement said the actions of Israel in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Occupied Palestinian Territories were a clear violation of international law and the relevant UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions. The statement read that such actions also undermine all efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region.

In the statement, the Maldives government reiterated its unwavering support for the people of Palestine and their legitimate and just struggle to achieve a free, independent, and sovereign State. A lasting peaceful resolution of the conflict can only be realized through a two-state solution, with an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, the statement further read.

The Israeli forces frequently storm the Aqsa mosque and attack Muslim worshippers. Almost every year, the Israeli forces ups their antics during Ramadan when large number of Palestinians gather at the mosque for worship.

The most recent attacks started on Thursday while Palestinians performed the dawn prayers at the mosque.
