Former President of the Maldives and opposition leader Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has hung a giant banner with the 'India Out' slogan, on the walls of his residential home in Male' City.
Spearheaded by Yameen, the opposition is carrying out an 'India Out' campaign seeking to drive out Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives. The movement has gained momentum in recent months, especially in the atolls. The opposition continues to assert that India exerts undue influence on the Maldives and threatens national security and the country's independence.
As part of the movement, supporters of the campaign are hanging banners that state the campaign slogan outside their homes. A giant banner was hung two days back on the building where the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s office is located, and another banner was hung from Yameen's own residential home on the next block on Tuesday. An extra-large banner also hangs from a house in Galolhu ward of Male' City.
Former Hoarafushi MP Mohamed Ismail, who leads the activity, said the banner hanging campaign would be expanded in Male' City, and banners would be hung from several buildings in the city.
