Nasheed will contest in the 2023 election: MP Eva

Deputy Speaker and Galolhu North MP Eva Abdulla has stated that Parliament Speaker and former President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed would contest in the 2023 Presidential Election.

The MP made the statement while speaking at a campaign event held for MDP's Chairpersonship candidate MP Imthiyaz Fahmy in HDh. Kulhudhuffushi.

Eva, who is also Nasheed's cousin, said the goal is to ensure an MDP administration in 2023. Her comment is believed to be in response to statements by some government officials who have said Imthiyaz's campaign team was conducting themselves in such a way that it would cost MDP the 2023 Presidential Election.

The MP went on to state that Nasheed would contest in the upcoming Presidential Election by attaining MDP's ticket in a primary.

'In 2023, we want an MDP administration. We all want an MDP administration in the 2023 election. God willing, Nasheed would contest in the 2023 election. Nasheed would contest in the party primary,' said Eva.

While Eva has said Nasheed would be a presidential candidate next year, Nasheed has said he would be undefeatable in any internal elections of MDP. In a press conference held on September 5, 2021, he was asked if he would back President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih if he faced defeat in the 2023 primary. In his response, Nasheed said it was impossible to beat him in MDP's primary and did not give a clear answer whether he would support President Solih.
