MDP decides to withdraw no-confidence motions against Speaker and Dept. Speaker

The main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Parliamentary Group has decided to withdraw the no-confidence motion against Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla.

MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Mohamed Aslam conveyed the decision to AVAS, explaining that the withdrawal was intended to facilitate a smoother progression of affairs.

The MDP initiated the no-confidence motion against Nasheed on June 7, citing repeated violations of parliamentary rules and regulations. These allegations included actions such as obstructing committee formations, involvement in efforts by certain members to disrupt parliamentary proceedings, and frequently vacating the chair during sessions without providing a specific reason. Nasheed also faced accusations of personal bias against certain members and impeding the no-confidence motion against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath. A total of 54 MPs had signed the no-confidence motion.

The decision to withdraw the case against Nasheed and Eva coincides with President Solih's second-place finish in Saturday's presidential election. To secure victory in the second round against the PPM-PNC candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, President Solih requires the support of other political parties. The decision to withdraw the no-confidence motion comes while a decision regarding the motion to remove Nasheed from office was scheduled to be addressed during Monday's parliamentary session.
