The MDP Parliamentary Group Leader and Hithadhoo North MP Mohamed Aslam today said that Parliament rules are being misused.
An extraordinary parliament session was held earlier today to reconstitute the standing committees of the parliament. However, it ended without any progress, leaving important matters unresolved.
Addressing a press conference conducted by the MDP parliamentary group, the MDP Parliamentary Group Leader and Hithadhoo North MP, Mohamed Aslam, expressed his concern over the misuse of parliamentary rules by the parliament's presidency. He expressed his belief that the issue could be addressed and resolved within the parliament.
The main-ruling MDP has moved a no-confidence motion against Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla. While the opposition argues that no-confidence motions against the Speaker and Deputy Speaker cannot be pursued simultaneously, MDP believes there are no legal obstructions to doing so. Aslam stated that if the rules prohibit it, one case will be withdrawn.
Aslam said Speaker Nasheed must carry out his responsibilities impartially. He called on Nasheed to enforce the rules of the Parliament, stating that he must resign if he refused to adhere to the parliamentary rules.
“If you refuse to follow the rules of parliament, resign,” Aslam said.
Aslam also mentioned that if a resolution cannot be reached through parliamentary means, the matter will be brought before the Supreme Court through a legal case.
