May 2 declared as Eid-al-Fitr

The Islamic Ministry has said Eid-al-Fitr this year would fall on Monday, May 2.

A moon-sighting ceremony was held Saturday night to determine the first day of Shawwal. Following the ceremony, Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir Ali said the new moon was not sighted in the Maldives or any other Islamic country and that reliable celestial calculations confirm the new moon would not be sighted on Saturday night. Therefore, Eid-Al-Fitr and Shawwal 1, 1443, will be May 2, Monday this year.

In his message, the Islamic Minister sent Eid greetings to all Maldivians.
