The Islamic Ministry of Maldives has announced a revision in the commencement time for Eid prayers, shifting it from the traditional 7:30 am to 7:00 am.
A resolution signed and issued by Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said the previous prayer time coincided with a time at which intense heat is experienced after sunrise. Noting that Eid prayers are now held in squares and open spaces, worshippers attending the prayers face difficulties in the heat when the prayer begins at 7:30 am, it stated.
The Islamic Ministry said the change aligns with evidence suggesting that Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) offered the Eid prayer before the sun's heat intensified, during the time of Duha.
The ministry further said the change was made after consultations with the Supreme Council of Islamic Fatwa, religious scholars, and the Astronomical Committee at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.
