Prequalification for GIA contractors in progress

Prequalification of contractors for the development of Gan International Airport (GIA) has commenced.

The GIA will be developed with a USD 800 million loan from India's EXIM Bank. The bank, therefore, carries out the prequalification.

According to the Economics Ministry, the airport can cater to 1.5 million tourists annually upon completion of the project.

The project includes the construction of a passenger terminal and fire station, a control tower, airport roads, cold storage, modern cargo facilities, and a dedicated parking area. If the works continue as planned, the practical work will commence by the end of this year, the ministry had said.

The practical work in the development of Hanimaadhoo International Airport, also with Indian assistance, is set to begin soon.
