Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has officially taken over as main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Chairperson.

After taking office on Monday, Fayyaz met with senior MDP figures. The meeting was attended by the party's Vice President Mohamed Shifaz, Secretary-General Shazly Shafeeq, Parliamentary Group Leader Mohamed Aslam, Vice-Chairpersons Ahmed Abdulla and Ali Niyaz, Women's Wing President Rozaina Adam, and Youth Wing President Aiminath Rifqa. Fayyaz was elected as the Chairperson of MDP in a very competitive election against Maafanu North MP Imthiyaz Fahmi. Fayyaz received 27,406 votes, while Imthiyaz received 20,217 votes.
