Fayyaz declares candidacy for MDP presidential primary

The opposing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has announced his decision to contest the presidential primary for the next presidential election.

Fayyaz, a key figure in the opposition and former Economic Minister in the MDP government, made the announcement in a message in the MDP National Assembly members' WhatsApp group. In his message, he sought their support for his candidacy,

The MDP presidential ticket is expected to be hotly contested, with the party's President Abdulla Shahid and Male' Mayor Adam Azim expected to join the race. However, neither have officially announced their intention to contest the primary.

Meanwhile, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has remained ambiguous about his participation. When asked if he would contest the presidential election, he said party leaders would be aware of his views on the matter.

Currently, Fayyaz and former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom are the only candidates who have officially declared their intention to contest the next presidential election.
