MIRA names resorts that do not pay rent

Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has named 12 resorts and four companies that have not paid their dues to the state as rent for resorts and agricultural islands.

The 12 tourism resorts have been listed on MIRA's Tax Center Board under the 'Name and Shame' policy formulated by the MIRA to make public the names of those who have not paid their dues to the state. The figure listed as due is the amount owed to the state by the end of 2021.

The resorts are:

Kihaa Maldives
Brennia Kottefaru
Rahaa Resort
JW Marriot Resort
Medhufushi Island Resort
Eriyadhoo Resort
Addu South Palm Maldives
Coco Palm Dhunikolhu, Biyaadhoo
Makunudhoo Island Resort
Teluveliga Retreat
Hondaafushi Island Resort

Agricultural islands:
Masmeery Aquaculture Company's Sh. Eriyadhoo
Ocean Quartier Properties' Lh. Gaaerifaru
Seenu Maldives' Sh. Medhukumburudhoo
Mohamed Waheed's Sh. Madidhoo

MIRA' Spokesperson Ahmed Shareef told AVAS that the non-tax dues are being made public first and that the tax dues will be made public later. He said those named in the current round owe more than MVR 100,000 to the state.

"As per the policy, [the names] will be published on the board for 15 days. After that, it will be gazetted and published in the mass media," Shareef said.

The Auditor General's Office (AGO) has found that many tourism companies have not paid a large amount due to the state. The amount owed is over MVR 17 billion. The Auditor-General has recommended that the money be recovered.
