EC announces MVR 10k fine for each invalid party membership form

The Election Commission (EC) has decided to impose a fine of MVR 10,000 for each invalid form submitted to the commission to join political parties.

EC's Vice-President Ismail Habeeb Wednesday said political parties would be fined for every invalid form submitted for party membership registration. The party Registrar will also be fined for each form. A fine of MVR 5,000 will be imposed for the first time, and a second violation would carry an MVR 10,000 fine.

Habeeb said all invalid forms submitted to the commission since April will be subject to the fine.

Since this month, the Election Commission has been making public the details of new members registered to political parties. Recently, cases have surfaced where some MPs of the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) are registered with other parties. However, the parties accused of submitting invalid forms have denied the allegations.
