Bar exam postponed to November

The bar examination, which must be completed before obtaining a license or permit to practice law, has been postponed to November.

The Bar Council postponed the bar examination following a Civil Court order to postpone the exam.

A large number of lawyers and law graduates have requested the Bar Council to postpone the first-ever bar examination to be held in the Maldives. However, the council first said the examination could not be delayed as it had undertaken a lot of administrative efforts and financial spending over the past three years to schedule the exam.

The examination was initially scheduled for the 25th of this month. However, the council issued a statement on Monday saying that the test will now be held on November 19.

The statement said students who have already registered for the examination and those who withdrew their names after registration would not be required to re-register for the November examination. The council will open registration for others who wish to take the November examination.

Although more than 1,000 candidates are eligible to sit the bar examination, only 200 registered for the exams. The biggest reasons cited by many for sitting out the exams are the high fees and unclear syllabus.

The fee for participating in the Bar exam is MVR 10,000.

Regarding the complaints, the Bar Council said more than 600 people attended an online meeting to provide information on the bar exam syllabus. The syllabus was gazetted and posted on the council's website on February 3 this year.
