The government has commenced work to facilitate the request of the resort owners association to expand the jurisdiction of the sorts.
The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), an association of resort owners in the Maldives, has complained to authorities about fishing activities near resorts that interfere with the safety and security of tourists and their freedom. The association has therefore requested that the area of jurisdiction of the resorts be increased from 500 meters to 1,000 meters.
Speaking regarding the proposal on state TV PSM, Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom said the government accepts the suggestion and is discussing it.
The Maldives has over 160 tourist resorts. If the jurisdiction of the resorts is expanded, it will cause difficulties for those involved in economic activities such as fishing. Experts also believe that this could lead to areas given to councils falling under the jurisdiction of resorts.
