Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will move forward despite the challenges it faces, the party's Chairperson, Fayyaz Ismail, has said. He made the remark in a tweet posted on the occasion of MDP's 17th anniversary.
MDP was registered on June 26, 2005, as the first political party in the Maldives. While the party celebrates its 17th anniversary, it is facing internal division and conflict. The division was also evident in the party's last internal elections, where the party's President and Parliament Speaker, Mohamed Nasheed' supported MP Imthiyaz Fahmy for the party's Chairperson, and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih backed Fayyaz for the post. Fayyaz won the election by a large margin.
