The national tax agency, Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), has warned that forged tax clearance reports are being submitted to government agencies and financial institutions.
MIRA said the tax clearance report is a document issued by the taxpayer to ensure taxpayers have paid all their dues and complied with all tax-related requirements.
As per Finance Circular No. 13-B/CIR/2019/9 (Procedure to be followed by Government Offices before taking action which may affect the revenue of the State), the authority is required to ensure in writing that a business has no dues to be paid to the government before state agencies issue, renew or amend permits and licenses, or change the operator of a business of any business. Therefore, the tax clearance report is required by many government agencies before these services are provided.
MIRA said tax clearance reports can be verified through the MIRA website. Agencies requiring tax clearance reports are advised to verify the report's authenticity through the MIRA website before accepting it.
