MVR 49 mln collected as Zakat-al-Mal in the first half of the year

MVR 49.5 million has been collected as Zakat al-Mal in the first half of this year.

Zakat-al-Mal is a religious obligation for all Muslims who meet the necessary criteria of wealth and is a mandatory charitable contribution. Each year, the Islamic Ministry decides on a Nisab, the minimum amount that a Muslim must have before being obliged to give Zakat. The ministry in June set the Nisab at MVR 6396.25.

The amount collected as Zakat-al-Mal in the first six months of the year is an increase of MVR 12.6 million compared to the same period last year. In the first half of last year, Zakat al-Mal paid stood at MVR 36.9 million.

The highest amount was received as Zakat al-Mal in April, during which MVR 22.5 million was collected. Last month, MVR 6.3 million was collected as Zakat.

April - MVR 22.5 million
May - MVR 4.5 million
June - MVR 6.3 million

According to statistics released by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), the highest amount was collected as Zakat al-Mal in 2021. Last year, MVR 90.6 million was paid to MIRA as Zakat al-Mal.

Zakat al-Mal was previously paid to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. However, since 2016, the collection of property zakat has been transferred to MIRA. The Zakat can now be paid through MIRA's online platforms and by visiting MIRA.
