The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has collected over MVR 70 million in Zakat-al-Mal as of the end of September this year.
Zakat-al-Mal is a religious obligation for all Muslims who meet the necessary wealth criteria and is a mandatory charitable contribution. Each year, the Islamic Ministry decides on a Nisab, the minimum amount a Muslim must have before being obliged to give Zakat. The current Nisab is MVR 7,151.90.
According to MIRA statistics, the amount received as Zakat-al-Mal by the end of September this year has decreased compared to the same period last year. In the same period last year, MVR 73 million was collected as Zakat-al-Mal.

Zakat-al-Mal payments were previously directed to the Islamic Ministry. However, since 2016, the collection of Zakat has been transferred to MIRA. Individuals can fulfill their Zakat obligations through MIRA's online platforms or by visiting MIRA in person.
