Some development projects carried out against regulations: EPA

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said that some development projects are being carried out against regulations.

EPA made the remark in a statement issued by the agency on Thursday amid criticism of the agency for ordering the suspension of construction of two harbors in Addu City. The EPA has not publicly announced the reason for the suspension of the projects.

The EPA said in its statement that some entities are not regularly submitting the monitoring reports required to be submitted to EPA to identify environmental changes due to projects. EPA further said the permits issued by the agency to carry out projects require the agency to be notified in writing the date of commencement of the project. However, some entities do not follow the provision, said EPA.

The EPA statement also expressed concern that some projects are being carried out despite climate warnings.

"Therefore, those carrying out development projects are requested to carry out the project works in accordance with the permits issued by this agency to minimize the damage caused to the environment," the statement read.
