Official handover of presidential ticket to Yameen scheduled for 19th

The opposition coalition will be holding a special ceremony to hand over the presidential ticket to the President of the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and former President of the Maldives, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.

An official from the Progressive Congress coalition told AVAS that the rally would be held on the night of 19th August.

The primary purpose of the ceremony is to congratulate President Yameen on accepting the opposition's presidential ticket and officially handing over the presidential ticket to him, the official said.

"We will also be explaining our constitution and some of the changes made to it as it is not clear to some people," the official added.

Noting that the rally will be held in such a way that supporters from the atolls can join the rally, the official said the coalition would ensure as many people as possible can attend the event.

On Tuesday night, the opposition coalition's Senate decided to present their presidential ticket to President Yameen to contest the upcoming 2023 Presidential Election. Some have heavily criticized the party for granting the ticket to Yameen without holding a primary. The coalition's senior leaders have responded to the criticism, stating that none of its members wished to contest a primary against their leader. They said no one wished to contest against President Yameen because they believed Yameen to be the only leader who could take the country in the right direction.
